Director of Technology, innovation, and online learning at the Garnet Valley School District

Samuel Mormando is the Director of Technology, Innovation, and Online Learning for the Garnet Valley School District in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania. Prior to this, he was an award-winning Classrooms for the Future teacher and instructional coach for the William Penn School District. Under his leadership, Garnet Valley has become nationally recognized for innovative teaching practices, including its adoption of Open Education Resources, using Amazon’s Alexa as a learning aid for students, and developing its student-centered course design process which allows students at the secondary level to take their courses in any one of three course formats: traditional face-to-face, online, and/or blended.

Sam oversaw several successful implementations of sustainable change initiatives that set the foundation to move Garnet Valley from good to great by developing a multi-year, fiscally responsible technology plan that is student-centered, that assesses infrastructure, that helps pilot hardware & software, that ensures technology supports instruction, and that creates a collaborative, ongoing professional development plan for all staff.

As a result, Sam has emerged as an innovator leader, speaker, and has contributed to several educational works including Why our district is investing in AI, AR, VR, and MR, How We Improved our Blended-Learning Program, There are Not Enough Moonshots Taken in Education, and 5 Tips for Preparing Teachers for New Classroom Tech Tools. He has consulted for numerous school districts and Intermediate Units in the area of instructional technology and has been a featured presenter at ISTE, TECA, FETC, and PETE&C. Sam will earn a Ed.D in School Systems Leadership from Widener University in 2021.

Becoming future Ready

In 2014, Dr. Marc Bertrando, Superintendent of Schools for the Garnet Valley School District, signed the Future Ready District Pledge demonstrating his commitment to work collaboratively with key district stakeholders to set a vision for teaching and learning in this digital age, to empower educators through personalized professional development, and to mentor other district leaders in their own transition in becoming Future Ready educators. Since then, our District has moved at an accelerated pace to become Future Ready and personalize learning for our students and staff.
